Sea Defences Felixstowe

Tuesday 3rd April 2012

For this talk we were joined by Eric and Duncan from Volker Stevin who are currently updating the sea defences in central Felixstowe. The work involves replacing 18 off groynes located between the war memorial and Jacobs ladder. Further to this the beach is being built up with imported sand and shingle and a vehicle ramp and a series of pedestrian steps are being added. The talk covered the methods of construction of the groynes, the methods of recharging the beach area as well as the sources of the stones and the criteria of how they are being laid to ensure that the wave energy is dissipated before it can damage the beach. The new groynes are expected to protect the sea front for at least the next 50 years. The talk was concluded with a question and answer session that provoked many interesting topics of conversation regarding the on-going works
