AA man

Tuesday 29th May 2012

The May talk was given by Colin who worked for the AA as a patrolman in the 1950s and 60s. Colin covered the area from Saxmundam to Ipswich which included Saxted Green and recounted many fascinating tales of his activities during this period. Colin began with a road service outfit (motorcycle and side car) and later this was replaced by a van and land rover when he later patrolled part of the M1. Colin also gave us a history of the AA which was founded in 1905 employing scouts on bicycles to salute members as they passed. If a salute was not given this was a warning that speed limits were being enforced. The 1920s saw the introduction of the road service outfits and in the 1950s the AA had its millionth member.
